Ted Nuttal NWSTed Nuttall is the quintessential people watcher, a habit that has engendered an intuitive ability to capture, in his paintings, the quiet underlying character of his subjects. A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted is a figurative watercolorist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people, his experience and travels as an illustrator for the United States Air Force, and a twenty five year career in graphic design. His work, as a designer, illustrator, and fine artist has won numerous national, regional and local awards. Though often viewed by many as intimidating and challenging, painting the figure can be just as approachable as a still life or landscape and brings with its accomplishment a unique satisfaction and reward. In his workshop Ted will discuss, with daily demonstrations and one on one interaction with the class members, how to achieve spontaneity, character and life in your figure paintings. As he shares with you his approach to the figure and some specific techniques he uses to bring excitement to his paintings you will find your paintings taking on a new life and will have great fun in the process. |

Don’t Give UpLast year for my entry for the FWS 2007 annual exhibition, I was out of time to have it postmarked for entry. I had a slide of my painting professionally made but when I picked it up it was way up in contrast and underexposed. I had no choice but to send it, it was the due date. I knew that there was little chance of my painting being accepted as the juror could not see a clear image of my work. NOT ACCEPTED. I believed in my painting and decided to do a study to select the best slide film available. The following should help if you decide to make your own slides. You may have trouble finding the best film but if you can contact a good camera/photo store they can send it to you. I found all four of the films I studied at: Orben’s Camera Center in Jacksonville, FL 904.398.9789. The following is the study result. It was expensive but well worth the cost and effort. All films were 100 ASA and exposed at F-16 in direct sunlight. Try to fill the frame of the slide and mask unwanted areas with Mylar tape.
With good slides on hand I entered more competitions with my painting. It was accepted in the Jacksonville WCS fall show and now the original painting is in the National Watercolor Society Annual Membership Show in the VIVA Gallery, Sherman Oak, California. The moral of this story: If you believe in your painting: DON’T GIVE UP! If one juror/judge rejects you work, another may love it. Richard French, FWS - Life |
